Dear Fellow Congregants

As I write this, the world is warming up after a long New York winter. Despite occasional cold spells, daffodils have emerged throughout Central Park and trees all over the city are flowering. Passover has come and gone, reminding us yet again how fortunate we are in so many ways.

I am privileged to serve as the president of our incredible congregation, which is brimming with people who are committed to each other, to our great institution, and to the Jewish people.

This annual “State of the Synagogue” report highlights some of what is ahead for us here at Central:

Over the past several months, many of you have asked me what the next chapter of my involvement with Jewish life will look like next year, after I have stepped aside as Senior Rabbi.

The Rabbi Peter J. Rubinstein Fund for the Renaissance of Reform Judaism is our way of showing our immense appreciation and gratitude for our visionary, teacher, leader, and friend, Rabbi Peter J. Rubinstein, as he steps aside as Senior Rabbi of Central Synagogue in June 2014.

Despite our aspirations to the contrary, especially as we prepare for our Passover Seder, the shootings in Kansas City alert us again to the terrible acts of anti-Semitism both historic and present. Our hearts go to the families of those who were killed along with the entire Jewish community of Kansas City.
