Repairing the World

Repairing the World

Tikkun olam, or repairing the world, is a bedrock value of Jewish faith. Practicing Tikkun olam strengthens our Jewish identity and allows us to live out our values.

Central in Action, the synagogue’s member-led social justice leadership team, guides and oversees Central’s justice initiatives. In 2016, members of Central in Action consulted with more than 500 Central congregants to learn about the issues in New York which most impacted and troubled our members. Overwhelmingly, our congregation asked us to focus on issues of racial justice, criminal justice, education, and immigration. Since then, we have worked in coalition with activists, advocates, and congregations from around New York to effect change throughout our city and state. Currently led by Central members Emily Steinman and Scott Resnik, Central in Action invites the broader community to engage with networks of New York communities to support and spark deeper compassion and social change.
