Update: Addressing Coronavirus Concerns

Last week all members received the following message, via email, from Executive Director Marcia Caban regarding Central's actions in relation to news of the Coronavirus, or COVID-19, and the steps we are taking to ensure the safety of our community. We are closely monitoring advice from government agencies and have also put together a lay committee of member-experts in fields of healthcare, medicine, and logistics.

Central and Other NY Faith Leaders Turn on the TAP

Central Synagogue has added its name to a growing list of NY faith leaders who want to Turn on the TAP. Central is part of a coalition to restore the public Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) to men and women who are incarcerated in New York State.
The Turn on the TAP campaign supports a bill that would grant thousands of men and women access to higher education. College-in-prison programs have proven to ease returning citizens’ reentry into society and increase safety within prisons. Read the letter that will be delivered in person to legislators onTurn on the TAP Advocacy Day in Albany on March 17.

Teens Reflect on Confirmation Trip to Vienna


This month, 10th graders who are part of this year’s Confirmation Class traveled to Vienna with Cantor Dan Mutlu, Rabbi Rebecca Rosenthal, and LCLJ staff Merissa Hochberg and Amanda Phillips.


The students learned about the history and presence of Judaism in the region, attending Shabbat services at the local Reform synagogue and touring sites including Mauthausen concentration camp—the last to be liberated during World War II—and the Stadttempel, the only synagogue in the area to survive Kristallnacht.


They also learned about Vienna’s rich classical music tradition at the interactive House of Music museum and attended a chocolate-making workshop.

Central Launches Newest Advocacy Campaign: Turn on the TAP

On Thursday, February 13, 2020,Central Synagogue launched its newest advocacy campaign: the reinstatement of the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) for men and women who are incarcerated in New York State. Over 100 members gathered for a night of revelation and storytelling, and learned about ways in which access to higher education in prison has the power to transform lives.
