Cantor Mutlu’s Reflection on Chanukah
I am so grateful that on Friday, January 26 that 6 pm I will be installed as Central Synagogue’s senior cantor. Looking forward to this event I am reminded of all of my guiding lights along the way: from the instructor of that first music theory class to the rabbis, cantors, colleagues, and teachers who continue to show me the way.

Preventing Genocide and Protecting the Rohingya People
The Rohingya are a Muslim ethnic minority in Burma (also known as Myanmar). Recently the American Jewish World Service (AJWS) reported: “since August 25, 2017, Burmese forces have burned entire Rohingya villages to the ground, soldiers have indiscriminately massacred and raped Rohingya men, women and children, and more than 600,000 people have been forced to flee by foot and boats to refugee camps in Bangladesh, a three-day trek from their burned villages.” These genocidal and other heinous acts continue to be committed.

Last Monday, we were fortunate to have Dr. Steven Bayme, American Jewish Committee’s Director of Jewish Life join us to discuss the history of Jerusalem during the past 100 years, unpack what exactly has taken place in light of the recent announcement to move the Embassy to Jerusalem, and discuss the implications of this announcement for the future of Israel and Israeli-Diaspora relations.

Union For Reform Judaism (URJ) Biennial 2017
Last week, a delegation of over 20 staff and congregants from Central Synagogue joined over 6,000 Reform Jews at the URJ’s biennial conference in Boston. The URJ’s mission is to strengthen congregations and communities that connect people to Jewish life. Central was well represented with Rabbi Auerbach leading a session on Core Groups, Rabbi Kolin moderating a training on Social Justice, Shani Ben Or reading Torah, and Elana Arian performing her beautiful rendition of Hinei Mah Tov.

Remembering Kristallnacht
We remember that 79 years ago, on November 9th and 10th, the Nazi party, alongside regular civilians, engaged in a series of coordinated pogroms against Jews in Germany and Austria in an evening we now call Kristallnach, the night of broken glass.
