Rena Singer, Rabbinic Intern Turned Insta-Celeb, Honored by “Jewish Week”

June 5, 2019

Central’s Rabbinic Intern Rena Singer was honored on Wednesday, June 5, as one of The Jewish Week’s “36 Under 36” — young, innovative Jewish leaders making a difference in the world.

For Singer, that innovation comes in the form of the Instagram account @modern_ritual — a project she created with fellow Hebrew Union College classmate Rabbi Samantha Frank in 2017. The account, and related website exists to bring “engaging, beautiful Jewish content” to Instagram.

The account boasts more than 8,000 followers who engage with timely posts that are simultaneously humorous, informative, modern, and inspiring.  Singer and Frank ask their fans questions that prompt them to reflect and engage in Judaism, and they get plenty of answers.

Together with Frank, Singer is reshaping what it means to be Jewish. She says, “We are really trying to model Jewish living for young adults.”  Learn more about “36 Under 36” and flip through the event program here.
