Here’s How You Can Help at the U.S. Border Crisis
July 18, 2019 | Repairing the World
Here’s How You Can Help:
We have been watching with horror the recent news of the callous and inhumane mistreatment of the “huddled masses” now gathered at our borders. The Talmud teaches us that if we fail to protest the actions of our fellow citizens, we become liable for their wrongs. In this moment, we as a faith community cannot afford to stand idly by while children are denied basic necessities. If you would like to support organizations on the front lines, here are two other actions you can take:
1. Donate money or miles to organizations that are doing work on the ground.
- Fund legal teams demanding inspection and improvement of detention facilities and advocating for the rights of detained families.
- Donate to KIND, which represents migrant children in immigration proceedings.
- Donate airline miles to volunteer attorneys traveling to detention centers.
- Buy supplies through Arizona Jews for Justice’s Amazon wish list for families recently released from detention.
2. Take action.
- Calling all Lawyers and Spanish Speakers: Join us on Tuesday, August 6, 2019, from 7:00-8:30 pm in the Lindenbaum Pavilion for an informational and training session hosted by HIAS. Come learn how HIAS is responding to the immigration crisis, and the ways in which you can directly support their work in NYC and on the border. All are welcome. Please visit www.www.centralsynagogue.org/hiastraining.
- HIAS offers a wide range of advocacy and local volunteer opportunities, which are updated regularly.
- HIAS and KIND have recently started a pro bono legal assistance project for separated families. If you are an attorney and would like to join with other lawyers from Central to offer your time to represent separated families, please email Rabbi Hilly Haber ([email protected]) or Chelsea Werde ([email protected]).
We hope you will be moved to join us in standing up for our neighbors who are suffering at our borders.
