A Message from Clergy: Supporting Israeli Democracy

March 27, 2023 | Messages From Leadership

The following message was shared with the congregation on Monday, March 27, 2023.

Dear Central Family,

You have likely been following the unprecedented events in Israel, as twelve weeks of massive public protests against the government’s proposed judicial reforms came to a head with the firing of the Defense Minister. Medical and airport workers are now on strike, universities and schools are shuttered, municipal services shut down, large and small businesses have suspended their activities, and IDF generals and reservists warned they would not show up for duty if the proposed laws were enacted. Closer to home, the Israeli Consul General in New York, Asaf Zamir, has resigned his post.

Prime Minister Netanyahu has just announced that he will delay his plans to overhaul the judiciary. We are grateful that democracy – and the voices of hundreds of thousands of Israelis who demand and defend it – has prevailed, but we know the conflict is far from being resolved. Like many of you, we will continue to watch the evolving situation closely with a combination of trepidation and hope.

We remain committed to providing ways to engage and connect with Israel throughout the year. This includes our range of thoughtful, challenging, and very personal Israel @ 75 programs. Learn more here.

We affirm our engagement and support of Israel as a democratic Jewish state that cares for the rights and dignity of all its people.
