You Belong at Central

We would love for you to become part of the Central Synagogue family, where we are sure you will discover a true spiritual home – a kehillah kedoshah.

Joyful in worship, visionary in education, and always attuned to who might be in need of comfort, compassion or assistance, Central offers multiple opportunities to live more Jewishly at any age. Our warm and immersive Shabbat services feature thought-provoking sermons and extraordinary music, while our schools engage children from birth to b’nei mitzvah and beyond.

For generations, Central has been a beacon of Reform Judaism, inspiring people to live lives of meaning and purpose. Whether gathering in person or connecting online, you’ll find belonging, inspiration, and a welcoming community here.

There are three ways you can belong at Central:

MEMBERSHIP

Through Central membership, congregants demonstrate a strong commitment to our community, our values and the Jewish future. Membership includes a wide array of benefits, including access to our clergy for pastoral care and life cycle officiation, tickets to our main High Holiday services, and enrollment in our Lese Center for Living Judaism religious school and May Family Nursery School.

We are both privileged and grateful that interest in Central membership is so strong.

To ensure a consistent and high-quality member experience, we continuously assess our current resources before offering membership to new households. While you may experience a wait, our doors remain open to you for Shabbat worship and programs. You may immediately become a Central Friend while you await full membership, and new Central Neighbor cohorts begin quarterly.

FAQs

Do you have to be a Member to attend High Holiday services?

No. Central hosts Community Services for the general public inside our Community House on E. 55th Street. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are available on a first come, first served basis. Member services held inside our Main Sanctuary and at David Geffen Hall are for Members only. However, we livestream and broadcast Member services for all to attend virtually. Visit our High Holy Day Online Guide for details.

Why is there a waitlist at Central?

In order to preserve the high-quality experience we provide to our members, we regularly assess our resources before offering membership to new households.

Are there any ways to skip the waitlist?

Yes, there are two ways to skip the wait list.

1. If your immediate relative (parent, child, sibling) is a current Central member in good standing, please have them contact our membership department on your behalf.

2. If you enroll your child in our Nursery School or Religious School, your membership begins immediately.

How can I get involved with Central while awaiting membership?

Our doors remain open to you for Shabbat worship every Friday at 6:00 pm. We also hope you will join us at the classes and programs appearing on our website calendar, which are open to all. Many of our volunteer opportunities are also open to all. You may immediately become a Central Friend while you await full membership and new Central Neighbor cohorts begin quarterly.

What is the difference between Central Friends and Central Neighbors?

Both Friends and Neighbors have a strong connection with Central regardless of where in the world they live. Neighbors seek online connection with fellow worshippers through a private social network. Friends receive many similar benefits as Neighbors but do not have access to this platform.

CENTRAL NEIGHBORS

Founded in 2021, The Neighborhood at Central Synagogue has grown into a thriving online community for thousands of Jews around the world seeking to strengthen their connection with Central, Judaism, and each other.

Central Neighbors have private access to an active social network where they chat, learn and grow together. Neighbors also receive weekly curated content, invitations to special online events, preferred pricing and priority access to select programs, and referrals to local trusted clergy (when available) for life cycle needs. We welcome new Neighbors in cohorts at several points throughout the year.

Our hope is that Neighbors will remain—or become—a member of a local synagogue because there is no substitute for in-person community, prayer, social justice work and pastoral care. We are proud members of the Union of Reform Judaism, which has a synagogue locator to help connect you.

ANNUAL PROGRAM FEE: $1,000
Financial aid and monthly payment plan available.

CENTRAL FRIENDS

Different from joining a synagogue as a member, becoming a Central Friend is a way to deepen your sense of belonging and connection to Central while living outside New York. Central Friends feel spiritually at home at Central regardless of their postal address. Central Friends receive monthly curated content, invitations to special online events, preferred pricing and priority access to select programs, and referrals to local trusted clergy (when available) for life cycle needs. Unlike Central’s Neighbors, Central Friends do not participate on our online social network.

Our hope is that Friends remain—or become—a member of a local synagogue because there is no substitute for in-person community, prayer, social justice work and pastoral care. We are proud members of the Union of Reform Judaism, which has a synagogue locator to help connect you.

You may also choose to become a Central Friend while awaiting full membership.

ANNUAL PROGRAM FEE: $500
Please note: there is no financial aid option for Central Friends.
