Program Manager for Adult Education & Social Justice

Job Summary/Objective:

The Program Manager for Adult Education & Social Justice will be a part of the Adult Engagement team. Working with the Director of Adult Education, this person will also be responsible for the day-to-day logistics for all regular adult education classes. This individual will also work closely with the Director for Social Justice Organizing and Education in coordinating with lay leaders, staff, and outside organizations to create and support meaningful social justice opportunities for our members. They will manage existing volunteer programs, assess new volunteer opportunities developing principles to determine where we want to engage, and work to streamline our program management processes. This individual will collaborate and contribute to the overall goals of the Adult Engagement team and may also be responsible for overseeing a range of special adult engagement programming throughout the calendar year.

Reports to: Rabbi Sarah Berman, Rabbi and Director of Adult Education


Full-time, exempt and not eligible for OT, Monday through Thursday 9:00-5:30 and Friday 9:00 - 4:30 or equivalent, occasional evenings, expected to work some of the High Holy Days. Central Synagogue employees are not eligible for fully remote work.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  1.  Adult Education

    1. Act as point person for all regular Adult Education classes to students and instructors. Hold primary responsibility for updating the adult classes sections of Central’s website.

    2. Work with Director of Adult Education to select and hire educators, arrange annual calendar, and choose classes and plan special events.

    3. Manage day-to-day functioning and logistics (registration, scheduling, payroll, etc.) for all adult education classes. Work with facilities, communications, and other departments to ensure smooth operation.

    4. Plan and execute Adult Education gatherings and community-building activities. 

  1. Social Justice

    1. Support Director of Social Justice Organizing and Education in developing and executing a range of Social Justice programming and education.

    2. Act as primary liaison with Communications, Facilities, and AV/IT teams for all Social Justice and volunteerism programs. Hold primary responsibility for updating the Social Justice sections of Central’s website.

    3. Hold primary responsibility for all aspects of the existing ongoing and annual volunteer opportunities at Central Synagogue. Work across staff teams to ensure effective execution.

    4. Collaborate with the Communications team to develop an effective communications strategy for Social Justice and volunteer opportunities including creation of registration and promotional event materials.

    5. Cultivate relationships with key lay leaders to support and encourage their leadership in our Social Justice and volunteer efforts, increase congregational engagement, and identify new lay leaders.

    6. Identify additional volunteer opportunities for Central, working with staff, lay leaders and other mission aligned organizations, e.g., UJA Federation.

    7. Develop framework to evaluate existing programs and new opportunities that align with our goals and objectives.

    8. Make recommendations on process improvements and technology that will streamline the implementation of the programs, for example, registration and volunteer tracking. Gain buy-in and work with key departments, e.g., Finance and I.T., to implement.

  2. Other duties

    1. Collaborate with other members of the Adult Engagement team to design programs and events geared toward our adult members and to lead execution of assigned programs, including set-up, staffing, catering, communications, registration & evaluation.

    2. Act as source of information and support for congregants interested in Adult Engagement activities.


  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • 5+ years relevant work experience in a role serving members, the public, and other stakeholders; Jewish congregational or institutional setting preferred

  • Experience in program creation and project management

  • Technology: High level of computer literacy required (we use Windows): proven ability to quickly learn new software. Experience with SalesForce or similar CRM, knowledge of Zoom and Microsoft Teams a plus
