As NYC kicks off Pride Weekend, we invite Reverend Winnie Varghese, Dean of the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, to give the guest sermon from our bimah.
In 2025, Reverend Varghese was named the Dean of the Cathedral Church of St. John Divine, a historic appointment that marked the first woman and the first person of color to hold the position. A graduate of Union Theological Seminary, Reverend Varghese was also among the first queer people to be ordained in the Episcopal Church. She first became invested in faith after taking a course about women in the Hebrew Bible during college, and has said that she hopes her church "will be a sanctuary for the city—a place that both shelters and proclaims, that gathers the people and sends them out. She envisions the Cathedral not just as a house of worship, but as a public witness to the sacredness of every life.
