Talkin’ ‘Bout Our Generation (Yom Kippur 5770)

Michael S. Friedman  |  September 27, 2009

If a society can be judged, then so too can a generation. So tonight, I ask: If our own generation were to be judged, where would we come out on the scale? Now, I am not condemning our entire generation as sinful; far from it. We have much to be proud of. We are not Sodom. But have we built Zion? Certainly not yet.

Personal Character in Adversity (Yom Kippur 5770)

Peter J. Rubinstein  |  September 27, 2009

This liturgy reminded us this evening: “We, tonight, are memories in the making; warming seats for others who will remember us in some Kol Nidrei they shall hear when we are gone. Kol Nidrei commands and summons our acknowledgment of time. What we recall of others past and what we vow to leave behind for others still to come, who will remember us.” How will I be remembered? How will we be remembered?

Affirming Our Communal Character (Rosh HaShanah 5770)

Peter J. Rubinstein  |  September 19, 2009

Our character has been impugned. Our integrity is under assault. Slanderous defamation of our moral fiber echoes the Nazi propaganda campaign before they exterminated six million Jews. We are brutalized from without and yet, and yet…for the first time in my memory there have been whispers among Jews themselves who wonder whether we have gone astray. Have we behaved well? Can we be trusted? Is our character intact?
