Job Summary/Objective
The Director of Communications is responsible for leading overall organizational communications efforts. The Director articulates an ongoing communications strategy for the Synagogue and offers fresh, innovative thinking and strategic communications plans with the goal of improving overall awareness and engagement in our programs. This person is responsible for building out the storytelling platform while creating and marketing content for all synagogue events and educational programs.

The Director of Communications reports to the Executive Director and oversees the Communications Department, a team of two responsible for a wide range of communications in support of the synagogue’s goals and objectives. The Director of Communications builds strong collaborative relationships with the clergy, leadership team and colleagues across the organization to understand and address organizational and departmental communication. Using data, he/she evaluates opportunities to improve our communications strategy to reach various stakeholders and increase participation in our synagogue.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions
The key responsibilities for this position will include the following:

  • Develop and maintain clear and consistent messaging, branding and standards of excellence at all levels and across all mediums.
  • Drive the “look and feel” of all communications, ensuring brand consistency.
  • Oversee the design of print and digital marketing materials (invitations, booklets, posters, postcards, brochures) and email marketing.
  • Manage recurring communications initiatives including weekly programming email to congregants (Central Weekly), monthly internal email to staff (Team Update), internal resource guide for staff (The Playbook) and ongoing social media work.
  • Manage development and updates to Central Synagogues website, evaluating usability and making recommendations to improve layout and function.
  • Build strong internal relationships. Manage department requests for programming communications plans and materials, and provide advice and consultation on specific communication strategies.
  • Communicate with staff and congregants to collect testimonials and internal and external stories.
  • Receive, manage and respond to routine media requests. Monitor press and social media.
  • Review, strengthen and enforce established communications work flows and processes already in place.
  • Supervise staff and outside vendors relating to website management, eblasts and other electronic communications and additional print, electronic and social media focused projects.
  • Establish clear benchmarks and metrics for success, evaluating the institution’s progress and regularly reporting out to leadership, and be responsible for the communications department’s meeting of those goals.
  • Responsibly manage the communications budget.

  • Teaching Skills: you’re eager to share your competencies with the organization and skilled at helping others understand how to “do things better.” You inspire teams, including your direct reports, to do excellent work.
  • Digital Communications Skills: you’re up on current technologies, marketing trends and best practices. You understand content management systems (CMS), e-blast software, databases (CRMs), social media platforms, digital analytics, user experience (UX), and how they all work together.
  • Vendor Management/Art Director Skills: you have some hands-on skills and an eye for effective brand creative. You are comfortable working with (and giving direction to) web designers, print designers, print vendors, video editors, photographers and other creative professionals.
  • Detail Orientation: An admitted “perfectionist” with an eye for detail and desire to always be better, yet your experience has taught you that failure is better than never trying, and you don’t get discouraged for long.
  • Customer Service: you’re a pro at customer service and understand how to make each interaction a positive one.


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 12+ years’ experience as a communications professional with a passion for non-profit/mission-based work
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely and comfortably with senior level management and various stakeholders to develop and deliver clear, consistent and creative communications across a broad array of channels (both internal & external) for medium-to-large size organizations
  • Familiarity with non-profit environments and the Jewish community in New York
  • Jewish knowledge and proficiency in Hebrew are significant pluses

Department Hours

  • Full-time
  • FLSA classification (Exempt and not eligible for OT)
  • Depending on the position, the Director of Communications may be expected to be available to troubleshoot in emergencies after hours and on weekends and holidays. The Friday evening Shabbat services are the culmination of the Central week, therefore, the Director of Communication is expected to be available on an as needed basis until 6 PM on Fridays.

Working directly with The Director of Youth & Family Education and in close consultation with the Director of The Lese Center for Living Judaism and the Early Childhood Director, this person will be responsible for managing projects throughout the department as they pertain to the vision of the Youth & Family Engagement Department. Administrative Assistant/Clergy Study

The Clergy Assistant will work closely with our pulpit clergy and clergy administration team as a member of the Clergy Study. In this position, the Clergy Assistant will collaborate with two of the Rabbis to uphold and make possible the visions and priorities of Central Synagogue. This position will collaborate with the Community Organizing clergy lead, lay leaders and staff on the social justice initiatives and priorities of our congregational community, as well as support the work of our adult engagement programming. This person will act as the administrative support to two of our Rabbis; and support the Exploring Judaism & Conversion Studies program. Additionally, this position will act as the clergy study concierge, committed to enhancing member experiences, developing best practices and is gifted in both gatekeeping and customer service.

Development Officer

The Development Officer will play an integral leadership role within the Development Department, and will be involved in various aspects of development strategy and donor relationship management. We are looking for someone with 4-5 years experience in development who is entrepreneurial and a dynamic people person. This position requires a large amount of independence and initiative; however, regular collaboration with the Development team is essential.

Facilities Manager

The Facilities Manager is responsible for managing the design, planning, construction and maintenance of equipment, machinery, buildings, facilities and grounds. This position plans, budgets and schedules facility modifications, including estimates on equipment, labor materials and other related costs. In addition, this position is responsible for the safe and daily operations of the facilities. This position supervises the Buildings Manager and the Assistant Buildings Manager. All positions at Central Synagogue require individuals to be strong multi-taskers and independent problem-solvers, have excellent communication and project-management skills, work well under supervision and be extremely organized.
